THE SHORT ANSWER

Swap it in for most interiors

Same framing, same screws, same tapered-edge stopping. At -4.3kg to -13.1kg CO2em/2 instead of a positive number, with better impact resistance.

Stick with plasterboard for two things

Wet areas, and anywhere the Code calls for a non-combustible or Group 1 lining. We would rather say so upfront than have you find out three-quarters through a build.

−4.3 kg CO2e/m² for Paperfaced Internal. The range spans -4.3 to -13.1 across the product family, verified through independently registered EPDs published on EPD Australasia. Carbon negative, not just low carbon.

PLASTERBOARD

Positive. Standard 10-13mm gypsum plasterboard typically sits in the +1 to +3 kg CO2e/m² range based on published international gypsum EPDs.

 BUILDING CODE COMPLIANCE

SAVEBOARD

CodeMark certified. CodeMark is a deemed-to-comply certification and councils must accept it. Listed in Masterspec.

PLASTERBOARD

Long-established Building Code compliance pathways and BRANZ appraisals. Every consenting authority and installer in the country already knows the product.

FIRE PERFORMANCE

SAVEBOARD

Material Group 3 fire hazard rating. The same classification as plywood, MDF and particleboard. Suitable wherever a Group 3 lining is acceptable.

PLASTERBOARD

Group 1 fire hazard rating and non-combustible. A genuine point of difference wherever a non-combustible lining or a fire-rated system is required.

MOISTURE AND WET AREAS

SAVEBOARD

Moisture and mould resistant. Lab-tested at under 5% moisture absorption by weight. Water repellent, but explicitly not a substitute for bathroom plasterboard.

PLASTERBOARD

Standard board is not moisture resistant. Dedicated wet-area ranges (such as GIB Aqualine®) are purpose-made for bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, at a premium over standard board.

DURABILITY AND IMPACT RESISTANCE

SAVEBOARD

Impact resistant. Positioned as a plywood alternative for hallways, communal areas, garages and high-traffic commercial and industrial spaces.

PLASTERBOARD

Standard residential-grade board has moderate impact resistance and can dent or puncture. Impact-rated and fibre-reinforced variants exist, typically at extra cost.

BRACING

SAVEBOARD

Rated for wind and seismic bracing. The betterBRACE range extends this to external rigid air barrier and bracing duties, including Extra High wind zones.

PLASTERBOARD

Bracing-rated plasterboard systems exist and are widely specified, but they are a specific system, not the standard sheet.

INSTALLATION AND CUTTING

SAVEBOARD

Direct substitution. Same screws, fixing centres, tapes and adhesives. Tapered edges for plaster stopping. Cut with mechanical tools (circular saw, jigsaw) rather than score-and-snap.

PLASTERBOARD

Lightweight. Scored with a utility knife and snapped to size, screw-fixed to timber or steel framing. Familiar to every plasterer in the country.

OFFCUTS AND END OF LIFE

SAVEBOARD

saveBOARD Returns. Site offcuts and end-of-life boards come back at zero gate fee and are remanufactured into new boards.

PLASTERBOARD

Gypsum recycling scheme exists in some regions, but a large of plasterboard offcuts still go to landfill or are ground for soil conditioning.

PLASTERBOARD

Standard non-wet-area sheet is the cheapest lining on the shelf at retail. Wet-area and fire-rated grades carry a significant premium. 

Where saveBOARD makes the most sense

Sustainability-mandated projects

Chasing Green Star or Homestar credits, or need an EPD and ecolabel-backed material story for a tender? Negative embodied carbon and up to 100% recycled content give a documented edge over standard boards.

High-impact, high-traffic areas

Hallways, communal spaces, garages, industrial and commercial fitouts where plasterboard dents or punctures. Here saveBOARD is a plywood alternative, not just a plasterboard one.

Projects cutting landfill waste

Offcuts and end-of-life board return at zero gate fee and are remanufactured. That feeds directly into construction waste diversion targets and Green Star's Design for Circularity credit.

Bracing and structural lining

Rated for wind and seismic bracing in ways standard plasterboard is not typically specified for. The betterBRACE range takes that outside as a rigid air barrier.

Where standard plasterboard makes sense

To be upfront: plasterboard is not going anywhere, and there are good reasons it is still the default in a lot of situations.

Wet areas

Neither standard saveBOARD nor basic plasterboard is rated for bathrooms, saunas or similar. Dedicated wet-area plasterboard is purpose-built for exactly this and is a mature, widely trusted product.

Non-combustible, fire-rated linings

Gypsum board's Group 1 rating and non-combustibility make it the accepted lining for fire-separating walls and other compliance-drive applications. saveBOARD's Group 3 rating means it's not a drop-in replacement there.

Small jobs and patch repairs

For a single-room reno or a patch, plasterboard is stocked everywhere, cheap at retail, and every plasterer already knows it. saveBOARD's benefits compound at project scale, not on a one-sheet job.

Simplicity of finishing at scale

Because plasterboard is ubiquitous, sourcing, scheduling trades and matching finishes across a large residential build is often more straightforward with a product every supplier already stocks.

We would rather tell you this upfront than have you find out three-quarters through a build.

Cost: what we do and don't know

This is the section people searching for a cheaper alternative to plasterboard actually want, so let's be direct.

We are not going to pretend saveBOARD is definitely cheaper or more expensive sheet-for-sheet. That depends on the product, thickness and order size.

Where saveBOARD's cost case tends to land is less about the sticker price and more about avoided costs: less damage and fewer callbacks in high-traffic areas, no skip fees on offcuts, and a documented sustainability story that carries commercial weight on Green Star-rated or tender-assessed projects.
